Profitable MBSE
Protect you MBSE investment. Leverage PreEmpTek's MBSE lessons learned ensuring your successful MBSE journey.
Protect you MBSE investment. Leverage PreEmpTek's MBSE lessons learned ensuring your successful MBSE journey.
MBSE allows the project team to do a better job of detecting defects throughout the whole project lifecycle. Properly implemented, MBSE improves concurrent project team awareness and communication brought about by the digitization of key elements of daily engineering activities.
Go To Experts For Company Wide MBSE Implementation and Adoption
Capturing the full benefit of MBSE depends on being completely aware of all facets of its implementation. At PreEmpTek we understand the difficulties that arise when these facets are missed. Our vision involves working closely with organizations so they can leverage our hard lessons and avoid learning them firsthand.
Building a Healthy MBSE Corporate Wide Capability
Be it first time adopters or experienced MBSE practitioners, at PreEmpTek we help companies solve their MBSE implementation issues start to finish. We deploy common sense MBSE technical approaches, right-sized for your company. We develop and advise you through a strategic collaborative implementation of MBSE. Our journey ends when your MBSE capability is healthy, working and self-sustaining.
"AdopTeK" a Workshop Approach to MBSE
Using AdopTek, PreEmpTek’s workshop based, proprietary 8 step MBSE customizable process, we train and coach your organization to a right-sized, affordable, maintainable, understandable, sustainable and profitable MBSE solution.
Digitize Systems Engineering
MBSE transforms systems engineering paper practice to a digital basis where daily systems engineering orchestration occurs through the MBSE model. This impacts the whole project team because systems engineers by definition interface with all engineering disciplines and program management.
Standardize the Transformation
The industry goal is to provide a common language (UML, SysML, LML), toolset (commercial or public-domain), MBSE standards (OMG, INCOSE) and training so all companies can avail themselves of MBSE technology.
MBSE Implementation Proves Problematic
Although there are MBSE languages, toolsets, standards, training and great successes like JPL, MBSE adoption has been problematic and slow. Successfully building and maintaining an organic MBSE capable engineering infrastructure proves difficult because the adoption process is often unknown, vaguely defined, underestimated in its breadth, scope, and impact on daily project activities. Unexpected difficulties cause many early adopters to halt their efforts in frustration and disillusionment.
There are two kinds of MBSE train wrecks. In the first case the train goes off the rails in the middle of the project with all coming to a grinding halt. Even with earned value management in place MBSE model development can still go off the rails in this way. Here are just a few reasons why *1) the project team does not understand how much modeling is enough so they did not understand their exit criteria, *2) the task estimation was way off because the model interactions and stakeholders were unidentified, where their unanticipated interactions cause scope growth, *3) the goal and purpose of the model was never made clear, so no one understood how to prioritize their work, *4) the modeling tasks overmatched the modeling talent of the team (experience with the tools, architecture and modeling) and the work eventually bogged down, *5) the team became too enamored with the analytic side of modeling and ignored the more foundational (but mundane) features of the MBSE model, *6) no data was actually put into the model, just views. In the second case the train never leaves the station or only goes a short distance before stopping. This typically means #1) management does not see the value in the MBSE modeling effort and removes the funding and/or #2) the engineering culture itself summarily rejects the MBSE model because they don’t believe the MBSE message, or #3) the perceived learning curve is too high given engineering teams that are already overburdened. This train wreck lends for short-sided decision making that effects you company's competitive future.
MBSE can pay for itself in short order. Done right, the MBSE model increases project execution efficiency. There are fewer product defects because of increased lateral project design awareness leading to earlier defect detection. See MBSE investment spike paid off in back-end project cost reductions. Often MBSE projects are hastily halted before seeing this MBSE back end savings.
Digitally integrated tool environments seamlessly integrate data across company disciplines for collective real time analysis. Done through digital modeling and connectivity. Without an MBSE model your organization precludes itself from that participation. In the example, the MBSE model is integrated into Digital Twin setup as the authoritative source of truth.
The MBSE model database is a natural digital project technical baseline. The MBSE model used in this way eliminates system definition ambiguity and serves as a single source of truth (SSOT) for all project members to quickly access. This reduces wasted project time searching for data and converts it into quality time for the team to concentrate on the problem at hand.
By using the PreEmpTek AdopTek process managers and project teams:
#1)Know what the MBSE value proposition is and have properly aligned MBSE expectation
#2)See the need for a rollout plan as a hedge against engineering counter culture
#3)Understand the process, personnel and tools needed and how to properly allocate them to the MBSE job at hand
The PreEmpTek AdopTek process:
By using the PreEmpTek AdopTek process the MBSE project team:
*1)Understands model fidelity and its relationship to diminishing return
*2)Understands the importance of stakeholder and interaction definition done up front
*3)Keeps model purpose in mind always
*4)Correlates talent to task
*5) Properly balances the analytic and administrative modeling efforts
*6)Understands no data means no model
Whether MBSE is news to your company, or you have been dabbling in it for some time, or you are a seasoned MBSE user there are services that PreEmpTek can provide for you. Our proprietary full adoption process is modularized and can be applied as needed depending upon company needs.
The Why, What and How of MBSE Adoption has been highlighted here. The adoption process can be applied at all companies regardless of their MBSE maturity level. Some sections therefore being more applicable than others. Follow up then by contacting us. Initial consult is free. During this fact finding and discovery we can mutually decide whether PreEmpTek provides the expertise your company is looking for.
There are always existing problematic projects where MBSE does not seem to be gaining a foothold. There are many reasons for this - under or overly trained personal (yes, engineers can make things too complicated), bad modeling practices, misunderstanding the overall MBSE mission. Whatever it is, PreEmpTek is all too happy to consult on your project and help keep the project train moving.
Not all MBSE tools are made the same. They all have their own proclivities. Some are harder to learn than others. The AdopTek process trains you up in fundamental modeling principles independent of any particular MBSE toolset. This gives you better insight into what features you want in an MBSE toolset and turns the modeling process into a translation of your native lifecycle processes. At PreEmpTek we are experienced MagicDraw and Innoslate users. We can train your team explicitly in these tools or recommend other training venders for you to contact.
There is a soft side to MBSE that is properly rolling out the MBSE capability in your organization. In order to take full advantage of the MBSE model, organizations outside of Systems Engineering need be made aware of the MBSE model and their role in providing technical data to enhance the model itself. In return the MBSE model (developed correctly) makes their job easier. It is important that the whole project team understands this benefit. As an outsider PreEmpTek can help work through these issues as Corporate Culture can sometimes be your worst enemy.
MBSE is a digital model. It has a database and can communicate with other tools and models. It is already being used within "Engineering Eco-Systems" by different companies. PreEmpTek has experience in this Modeling Simulation and Analysis space in addition to its integration to PLM tools. We are happy to consult in these MBSE extension topic areas.
George Mukai here, PreEmpTek Founder. Our engineering expertise in MBSE is well complemented by years of experience in modeling/simulation, systems, software and mechanical architecture. Accomplished MBSE practitioners, teachers and hands-on developers, we are pleased to be of service.
